Preserving Culture: The Call for Local Authors to Write in Vernacular Languages

Local authors are being urged to pen their narratives in their native languages to foster the preservation of cultural identity and share unique stories with broader communities. This initiative was emphasized by Dr. Subashni Kumar, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Language and Literature at Fiji National University, during the launch of her Hindi book, “Fiji Hindi Sahityaksar Subramani ka Hindi Upanyas.”

Dr. Kumar champions the significance of storytelling in local and vernacular languages, stating that it’s essential to ensure traditional knowledge, cultural history, and personal experiences are not lost over time. “We must raise awareness regarding the works written in our vernaculars. It is our responsibility to write about our people, communities, and their experiences,” she expressed.

Highlighting the dual benefits of promoting literature in local languages, Dr. Kumar noted that it cultivates cultural pride while enabling younger generations to maintain connections to their roots and values.

Her commitment to encouraging local writers and youth to narrate their stories not only enhances creativity but also strengthens their understanding of literature. The movement aligns with recent scholarly discussions, such as Vijay Mishra’s “Subaltern Narratives in Fiji Hindi Literature.” Mishra’s work underscores the powerful interplay of language and identity and highlights the rich cultural narratives that emerge from vernacular languages, echoing Dr. Kumar’s call to action.

This initiative reflects an optimistic endeavor to revitalize Fiji’s literary landscape, encouraging diverse voices and lived experiences that celebrate the country’s rich heritage. As local writers step forward to share their stories, there is hope for a deepening appreciation of their cultural narratives, ultimately fostering greater unity within the community.

Encouragingly, as more individuals engage with their linguistic heritage, the potential for profound connections within the broader community expands, paving the way for a more inclusive narrative landscape in Fiji.
