Concerns have been raised by Sashi Kiran, the Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection in Fiji, regarding the troubling trend of suicide among elderly members of the Indo-Fijian community. During her address at the Nari Sabha night hosted at the Sanatan convention in Lautoka, she revealed that 90 percent of residents in aged care homes in the country belong to the Indo-Fijian population.
Highlighting the issue of neglect, Kiran pointed out that many elderly individuals and those living with disabilities often find themselves abandoned and lonely when younger family members move abroad in search of better opportunities. She emphasized the importance of families and communities working together to provide support for older citizens, stating, “We need to work through our networks to provide support to our elders, whose shoulders we stand on.”
Moreover, Kiran also underscored the need for more youth support initiatives aimed at aiding rehabilitation for individuals dealing with substance abuse. “Our community is synonymous with the word resilience. Our ancestors have gone through every challenge possible to build a future for us,” she noted, calling for solidarity in the face of social challenges.
Tributing the efforts of ancestors who preserved the Indo-Fijian culture, Kiran urged collective efforts to foster a nurturing environment for younger generations. She highlighted the essential role women have played in the community, pointing to how they have historically come together to share strength in challenging times.
This call to action reflects ongoing concerns raised previously about the mental health crisis facing seniors in Fiji, where reports indicated a rise in suicide rates among the elderly. Kiran’s advocacy for community engagement aligns with earlier discussions advocating for stronger support systems to ensure the dignity and mental well-being of older citizens.
Building upon a foundation of compassion, there is growing hope that through collaborative efforts, Fiji can create a more supportive societal landscape for its elderly population, allowing them to thrive and contribute their invaluable wisdom to the community.
