Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has decided to shorten his official visits to Singapore and Indonesia in order to attend the funeral of the late Turaga Ratu i Navatu, Ratu Epeli Mailekutu Wainiu. In a recent interview on “A Conversation with the PM,” Rabuka explained that he coordinated with the governments of Singapore and Indonesia to leave earlier, ensuring he can return to Fiji in time to honor the traditional ceremonies.
During these official visits, which were initially intended to strengthen Fiji’s bilateral relations, Mr. Rabuka was expected to meet with Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong to discuss key areas such as climate resilience, digital innovation, and education. Following this engagement, he was scheduled to travel to Indonesia for talks with President Prabowo Subianto focusing on regional security, agriculture, and disaster risk management. These discussions aimed to further deepen Fiji’s diplomatic ties, which have been in place since 1971 with Singapore and since 1974 with Indonesia.
In his absence, Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka will serve as Acting Prime Minister, ensuring continuity in governance during this time.
Reflecting on these developments, Rabuka’s decision to prioritize attending the funeral illustrates the significance of cultural traditions and respect for leadership in Fijian society. Additionally, while the official visits aimed at fostering international partnerships may be postponed, the Prime Minister’s outreach reflects Fiji’s ongoing commitment to enhancing cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region. The potential for future collaborations remains hopeful and bodes well for the strengthening of economic ties and cultural exchanges with both Southeast Asian nations.
