A task force comprising officials from various government departments has been established to tackle marijuana cultivation issues in Kadavu. Dubbed the ‘Cagivou Ni Ceva Drugs and HIV taskforce’, the initiative aims not only to combat drug production but also to raise awareness about preventing the spread of HIV on the island.
The launch of the task force, headed by Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu, signifies a united front by local leaders in Kadavu, as stated by provincial administrator George Dregaso. He mentioned that recent media coverage, specifically the headline “Drug Island” from the Fiji Times, has accelerated their commitment to addressing these serious concerns.
Currently, Dregaso pointed out that efforts have been limited primarily to the police and the Ministry of Health, which has prompted the inclusion of more sectors to find comprehensive solutions. He highlighted that the majority of drug activity is concentrated in upper Kadavu where infrastructure development is lacking, leading locals to cultivate marijuana as a means of livelihood.
Efforts will not only involve law enforcement actions, such as uprooting marijuana plants, but also community engagement to understand the underlying motivations for drug cultivation. Awareness campaigns will be held at the vanua level and during upcoming council meetings with the aim of developing alternative crops to replace marijuana.
The task force will also explore potential funding opportunities to assist the community as it works towards resolving both drug-related and health issues.
This initiative is in line with broader efforts within Fiji where local authorities and community leaders have recognized the pressing need for a multifaceted approach to combat drug issues. Past reports indicate that more than 31,000 marijuana plants were seized from farms in such operations, showcasing the commitment of law enforcement to tackle drug cultivation through collaboration with the community and engagement with local leaders.
These combined efforts instill a sense of hope for Kadavu’s future, illustrating a proactive resolve by the government and the community to foster an environment free from the grip of illegal drugs. There is a shared belief that with continued cooperation and awareness, a healthier future for the people of Kadavu and beyond can be achieved.
