The Nausori Magistrate’s Court has decided to transfer the case of a 21-year-old police officer to the High Court in Suva. Constable Apimeleki Vakarusabola Colamoto appeared before Magistrate Samanunu Vaniqi facing a charge of an act intended to cause grievous harm after an incident involving Vilikesa Bari on November 17 of this year.
During the proceedings, Police Prosecutor Shelveen Sharma requested the transfer of the case to the High Court, which was subsequently granted. As part of the court’s decision, Colamoto was released on bail with several conditions: he must pay a cash bail of $100, provide two sureties, surrender all travel documents, comply with a stop departure order, refrain from reoffending while on bail, and avoid any interference with state witnesses.
Colamoto is scheduled to appear at the High Court in Suva on January 20, 2025, where he will receive further disclosures and enter his plea. He has also been allowed time to consult with a Legal Aid lawyer for assistance.
This case highlights the legal processes in place to ensure that justice is pursued while also safeguarding the rights of the accused. It serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability, particularly for those in positions of authority, and the legal system’s commitment to addressing such matters seriously.
By ensuring that all procedures are followed correctly, we can maintain trust in law enforcement and the judicial system. The forthcoming court dates allow for a thorough examination of the case, which can lead to a better understanding and resolution of the situation.
