The Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew, made a fervent appeal to the public, urging them to report any credible information regarding police officers who may be involved in drug-related activities. In a media interview, Mr. Fong Chew emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of law enforcement while addressing the prevalent drug crisis.

He stated, “If police [are] involved, pass this information to us. I don’t want hearsay. I want credible information on who is involved, and we will take action.” He assured that any officers found guilty of such misconduct would face severe legal consequences. Recently, two officers were stripped of their pay and uniforms and faced court action as a result of their involvement.

The Acting Commissioner warned his fellow officers to adhere strictly to their sworn duties, stressing the gravity of being involved in illegal activities, particularly in the drug trade. “This is the worst-case scenario – dealing with officers involved in drugs. We will not hesitate to act,” he declared.

Addressing the broader drug crisis impacting both Fiji and the region, Mr. Fong Chew reaffirmed the commitment of the Fiji Police Force to combat drug-related issues despite numerous challenges. He noted, “We may be confined in Fiji, but the region is facing a similar crisis. We’ll continue our fight – come what may – to safeguard the population and future generations.”

Mr. Fong Chew also acknowledged the essential role of public awareness in combating the escalating drug problem. He expressed gratitude for recent media coverage, which has sparked conversations around the dangers of drugs and highlighted the issue that was previously suppressed. “This is a good indication that people are becoming more aware of the harms of drugs,” he remarked.

He encouraged the community to actively participate in the fight against drugs, reminding them of the serious consequences drug use has on individuals and families. “If you see anything related to drugs, think twice. There are already indications out there of how people have suffered and even passed on because of drugs,” he warned.

Additionally, the establishment of the National Narcotics Bureau (NCB) was highlighted as part of a collaborative effort to address the drug crisis effectively. While recognizing the bureau’s importance, Mr. Fong Chew emphasized that the Police Force remains dedicated to fighting against drug issues until they are entirely resolved. “We cannot stop. We will continue until and unless the war ends,” he concluded.

This proactive stance from the Acting Commissioner is a hopeful sign for community safety and drug awareness, encouraging citizens to unite against the pressing drug crisis. By fostering a transparent environment and actively involving the public in the fight against drugs, the Fiji Police Force’s commitment serves as a positive step towards a safer future for all.

In summary, the Acting Commissioner of Police is rallying both the public and police officers against drug-related activities, promising strict action against officers involved and emphasizing the community’s role in addressing the drug crisis.
