Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister James Marape has celebrated the strong ties between Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Australia during the launch of the “Yumi Stap Wantaim” campaign, which begins a year-long commemoration of PNG’s 50th anniversary of independence. Addressing attendees at the inaugural ceremony, PM Marape noted that the campaign reflects the deep historical connections and the maturity of the bilateral relationship between the two nations.

The Prime Minister acknowledged Australia’s crucial role in PNG’s journey from its days as an administrator before independence in 1975 to its current position as a steadfast development partner and ally. He recognized Australia for its lasting assistance across various sectors such as health, education, and infrastructure, particularly during challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic.

Marape emphasized that the partnership is built on mutual respect and shared values, which is essential for future cooperation, as PNG aims to position itself not merely as an aid recipient but as an equal partner in regional peace and prosperity. He highlighted the importance of enhanced collaboration in trade, investment, and cultural exchange, which will be crucial as PNG approaches its golden jubilee in 2025.

Australian High Commissioner to PNG, Ewen McDonald, echoed Marape’s sentiments, describing the 50th anniversary as a moment to reflect on their enduring partnership and the vibrant spirit of the Papua New Guinean people. He highlighted that the “Yumi Stap Wantaim” campaign aims to engage communities through various cultural and diplomatic events, reinforcing the bonds between the two nations.

Furthermore, the campaign will feature diverse activities, including music festivals, art exhibitions, and academic exchanges, designed to foster greater people-to-people links across both nations. McDonald also acknowledged significant milestones in their bilateral relationship, such as Marape’s landmark address to the Australian Parliament in 2024 and the upcoming inclusion of a PNG team in the National Rugby League by 2028, marking a new chapter in people’s connections.

This renewed commitment between Australia and PNG heralds a hopeful future, underscoring the potential for enhanced cooperation and shared growth in the Pacific region. As both nations work together to celebrate their past and foster a collaborative path forward, their partnership can serve as a model for collective progress and resilience in facing regional challenges.
