Finance Minister Biman Prasad has urged families who have applied but have not yet received the $200 back-to-school assistance to visit the Ministry of Education to inquire about their application status. The minister clarified that funds have been distributed after assessments of the applications, emphasizing the efficiency and speed of the system, with over 208,000 applications processed and more than 200,000 payments made thus far.

“Families who missed out must ensure their applications are on file at the Education Ministry,” stated Prasad, noting that assistance specifically for Year 12 students is currently withheld pending the results of their external exams.

However, some parents, like Nisi Takirua, a mother who has struggled with the process, expressed frustration. Despite following all the application procedures and maintaining communication with authorities, she has yet to receive the promised funds. “These funds are crucial for getting children ready for school,” Takirua remarked, highlighting the stress such delays impose on families managing back-to-school preparations.

Another parent, Susana Vudali, echoed concerns, stating she received the aid for only two of her four children, despite following up on the status of the assistance for her others. “This was the help we were promised,” she added, underscoring the importance of the support for families during this financially challenging period.

The back-to-school assistance scheme is part of a broader government initiative that aims to support families with school-age children, especially those with a household income of less than $50,000. This financial aid program reflects the government’s commitment to education and helps alleviate the pressures associated with the costs of preparing children for the new academic year.

In summary, while many families have received the support they desperately need, some still face hurdles in accessing these funds. It is hoped that the government’s continued efforts and prompt attention to pending applications will ensure that every family is adequately supported as they prepare for the school year ahead.
