Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has raised alarm over the escalating challenges facing the Pacific region, asserting that the “Blue Pacific” must take charge of its own security future. Speaking at the opening of the 2025 Pacific Regional and National Security Conference in Suva, he highlighted that historically, the Pacific Ocean has often been exploited and treated as a battleground for external conflicts, as well as a site for dangerous weapons testing.

Rabuka emphasized that climate change has exacerbated vulnerabilities in the Pacific, calling it a current reality coupled with resource competition that poses significant threats. He pointed out that the focus should be on the security challenges prevalent within the region itself, as outlined in Fiji’s 2024 Foreign Policy White Paper, which identifies insecurity and strategic competition as mounting concerns.

Addressing what he described as a “polycrisis”—includes climate change, economic instability, illegal fishing, and the rise of transnational crime—Rabuka urged for collective regional responsibility. “I feel a particular responsibility as the Prime Minister of Fiji,” he stated, emphasizing the need for both national and regional strategies to address these alarming issues. He expressed a firm commitment to working alongside fellow Forum Island Countries to foster resilience and maintain regional stability.

Rabuka’s commitment to a united Pacific is further echoed by sentiments he shared in previous addresses, where he underscored the importance of collaboration among Pacific nations to navigate the multifaceted threats they face. This unified approach paints a hopeful picture, as Rabuka believes strengthened regional cooperation can significantly enhance the Pacific’s ability to confront its present and future challenges.

In conclusion, as regional leaders come together, there remains an optimistic perspective that through enhanced solidarity and cooperation, the Pacific nations can chart a path toward a secure and prosperous future for all involved.
