Pacific Islands Forum Economic Ministers and officials will convene in Nuku’alofa, Tonga, on March 25 and 26 for a vital Special Forum Economic Ministers Meeting (FEMM). This meeting aims to advance three major regional initiatives: the Pacific Roadmap for Economic Development (PRED), the Climate Finance Access and Mobilisation Strategy (CFAMS), and the Pacific Resilience Facility (PRF).

The PRED initiative is designed to enhance cohesion in economic policies and foster deeper economic integration within the Pacific region. It aligns with the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent and its Implementation Plan. The dialogue will also explore the CFAMS, which seeks to streamline climate finance access and improve regional collaboration.

A significant agenda item is the draft agreement for the PRF, a pioneering Pacific-led climate and disaster resilience financing facility. This facility will be managed by member states and aims to increase financial accessibility for climate initiatives, addressing the vulnerabilities exacerbated by climate change and external economic shocks.

Tonga’s hosting of the PRF was confirmed by Forum leaders during their previous meeting in 2024, marking an important milestone for regional cooperation. Given the complex global political landscape, the discussions at the Special FEMM will play a crucial role in ensuring collective action toward sustainable economic growth across the Blue Pacific.

Past discussions at FEMM meetings have highlighted the need for a robust response to climate finance challenges and the importance of strengthening regional cooperation. The collaborative framework established under the PRED and PRF initiatives presents a hopeful opportunity for Pacific nations to navigate the complexities posed by climate change while enhancing their economic resilience.

Tonga last hosted a Forum Economic Ministers meeting twelve years ago, and the anticipation surrounding this upcoming meeting signifies the increasing recognition of the pressing economic and environmental issues facing the region.
