The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has reported alarming statistics regarding serious sexual offenses in the past year, with a total of 252 counts recorded. Disturbingly, included in these cases are allegations involving a four-year-old girl who was reportedly sexually assaulted by her 53-year-old father, and a five-year-old girl allegedly raped by her 74-year-old grandfather.
A significant 141 individuals have been charged in connection with these offenses, among them 20 juveniles under the age of 18. The charges encompass a range of serious crimes, with 174 counts of rape, two counts of attempted rape, and various other sexual offenses including indecent assault and defilement.
Of the 135 identified victims, 79 were minors under the age of 18, highlighting the vulnerability of young children in these distressing situations. The breakdown of the victims shows that 120 were female and 15 were male. Notably, 63 of the offenses involved attackers known to the victims, underscoring the troubling reality that many incidents occur within domestic or familiar relationships.
Among those accused, the youngest are minors themselves, including a 12-year-old facing charges for allegedly raping his six-year-old cousin, and a 13-year-old accused of assaulting a five-year-old girl from his community.
