The partnership between the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has seen substantial growth over the past year. As the two forces come together to celebrate Waitangi Day, it serves as a poignant reminder of their enduring cultural and professional connections, deeply rooted in a shared history of service.

A prominent example of this commitment was the NZDF’s recent reprinting of “The History of the RFMF 1939-1945.” This edition was presented by New Zealand Chief of Defence Force Air Marshal Tony Davies to Commander of the RFMF, Major General Jone Kalouniwai. The book, initially authored by Lieutenant R.A. Howlett, an NZDF officer who served alongside the 1st Battalion, Fiji Infantry Regiment, recounts the wartime experiences that entwine the two nations, symbolizing the enduring respect and friendship that continues to flourish between the forces.

The historical ties between the NZDF and RFMF continue to evolve, particularly through the NZDF Mutual Assistance Program, first established in 1973. This program promotes personnel exchanges designed to enhance interoperability, support shared experiences, and foster personnel development. It encompasses promotional courses, trade training, and higher education opportunities, all contributing to the collaborative growth of both organizations.

Moreover, the NZDF is honored to collaborate with the RFMF on the Veiliutaki Leadership Framework, which echoes their shared commitment to values-based, culturally grounded leadership. This initiative aims to bolster Fiji-led leadership development, reinforcing integrity, competence, and trust within the RFMF amid an increasingly complex security landscape.

Recently, a significant milestone occurred when Air Marshal Davies and Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai officially turned the soil for the new RFMF Veiliutaki Centre. This facility is dedicated to cultivating the next generation of Fijian leaders and embodies a vision for a Pacific Leadership Development Centre that aims to enhance leadership and cooperation in the region.

As both forces celebrate their achievements, the upcoming year appears optimistic. Plans are in place to build upon established initiatives like the NZDF Mutual Assistance Program and the Veiliutaki Leadership Framework, while also seeking new opportunities to further strengthen the profound cultural ties between the NZDF and RFMF. Together, they remain dedicated to fostering a safe, secure, and prosperous Pacific region.
