Joe Rokoyawa expressed his gratitude to the officers from the National Fire Authority who assisted in evacuating his two young grandchildren to higher ground after a severe flooding event during the recent downpour on Sunday night. The 68-year-old resident from Nasevou Street, Lami, described the flood as the worst the area has seen in thirty years, affecting approximately 20 homes, including the Qauia Police Post.

According to Mr. Rokoyawa, the heavy rainfall began in the evening and quickly led to widespread flooding. “At first, I thought the water would stay only in my compound, but when it started entering our house, we were shocked,” he recounted. “We hoped it might go down, but it kept rising rapidly.”

The situation escalated, prompting concerns for the family’s safety. Realizing the seriousness of the flood, Mr. Rokoyawa called for help from the National Fire Authority officers who were patrolling the area. They quickly assisted in relocating his five-month-old grandson and five-year-old granddaughter to a nearby home situated on higher ground. Meanwhile, the women in the family were moved to Mr. Rokoyawa’s sister’s house, which unfortunately also experienced flooding.

Reflecting on the rapid progression of the flood, Mr. Rokoyawa noted, “We were initially relaxed, never imagining the water would rise so high.” He expressed gratitude that although the family faced significant property loss, everyone remained unharmed. “I am thankful to God that no one in the family was injured, even though we suffered significant losses due to the flood damage,” he stated.

This incident serves as a vivid reminder of the unpredictable nature of weather and the importance of preparedness and community support in times of emergency. Mr. Rokoyawa’s experience highlights the resilience of families facing natural disasters and the critical role of emergency services in safeguarding lives during such crises.
