The Ministry of Defence of New Zealand is reaching out to companies and experts for guidance on a potential initiative involving surveillance drones aimed at enhancing maritime security in the Pacific region. This move is a part of the Defence Capability Plan that was unveiled last year, which emphasizes the incorporation of uncrewed technologies such as drones.
These drones are intended to carry out ongoing maritime surveillance to safeguard the waters within New Zealand’s exclusive economic zone while also aiding Pacific partners. The Ministry has issued a tender to gather insights from various stakeholders, including businesses and academics, regarding the most effective technological solutions.
According to the Ministry, this endeavor is tied to its long-range drone project outlined within the capability plan. However, officials have noted that drones may not be the only option considered for the surveillance operations. The statement from the Ministry indicated that while long-range remotely piloted aircraft are a focus, alternative solutions will also be explored.
Data gleaned from upcoming workshops is expected to contribute to developing a preliminary business case for the initiative later this year, with these workshops scheduled for the end of the month. Meanwhile, Defence Minister Judith Collins remained reticent on providing further comments regarding the project.
In a broader context, last April, the New Zealand government pledged to invest $12 billion over the next four years to create a modern and combat-ready Defence Force. This commitment includes a substantial increase in defence spending, which is projected to rise from just over one percent of the nation’s GDP to more than two percent within the next eight years, matching levels not seen since the early 1990s.
This strategic shift towards enhancing defence capabilities not only underscores New Zealand’s proactive stance in regional security but also reflects a growing recognition of the importance of modern technology in safeguarding national interests.
