New Recruits at FCS Receive Vital Lessons for Future Success

Commissioner of the Fiji Corrections Service, Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, engaged with new recruits during an informal *talanoa* session at the FCS Training Academy in Naboro this week. With just two weeks left until graduation, the group of trainees has completed a rigorous 14-week Basic Recruit Training program.

This session was not only an opportunity for reflection but also served as an important moment of motivation and guidance for these future Corrections Officers. Dr. Nakarawa praised the recruits for their resilience and dedication throughout their training journey.

He shared a vital lesson from his own career: “familiarity breeds contempt,” emphasizing that maintaining professional boundaries when interacting with inmates is crucial for their safety and the integrity of their roles. “You have everything to lose,” he reminded them, stressing the importance of integrity as they transition into their professional duties.

The Commissioner also highlighted the need for further education to bolster knowledge and confidence, pointing out that solid communication skills are fundamental to their success in the corrections environment. Furthermore, in a noteworthy collaboration, four individuals from His Majesty’s Prison in Tonga are set to become the first graduates from the FCS, receiving an accredited Certificate Level 5 in Corrections Management from Fiji National University.

Dr. Nakarawa reaffirmed the FCS commitment to integrity, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to service, as they continue to enhance the safety and rehabilitation of those within their care.

This proactive approach by the Fiji Corrections Service not only lays the groundwork for the development of skilled officers but also embodies a commitment to improving rehabilitation practices within the system. Such initiatives foster a hopeful vision for the future of corrections in Fiji, indicating a significant focus on training and professional integrity that will ultimately benefit both officers and the communities they serve.
