Career diplomat Jeff Roach has been appointed as Australia’s new high commissioner to the Solomon Islands. He was officially welcomed in Honiara today by Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele, with discussions centered around enhancing bilateral cooperation between the two nations.

During their meeting, both Manele and Roach reinforced their commitment to fostering a respectful and enduring partnership. Roach, who most recently led Australian initiatives related to the Tuvalu-Australia Falepili Union and the Nauru-Australia Treaty, brings significant diplomatic experience to the role, having previously served as High Commissioner to Vanuatu and Deputy Head of Mission at the United Nations in Geneva.

Prime Minister Manele emphasized the crucial role of cooperation as the Solomon Islands prepares to transition from Least Developed Country (LDC) status by 2027. He remarked on the importance of trade and economic collaboration, particularly highlighting the Pacific Agreement on Close Economic Relations (PACER Plus) as vital for the country’s development. A Transition Strategy is already in place to manage the gradual removal of special LDC support measures.

In addition, Manele pointed out the significance of the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme, which has been instrumental in addressing youth unemployment in the Solomon Islands. He suggested the potential for exploring new avenues in Early Childhood Education, building on the existing success of Solomon Islanders working in Australia’s aged care sector.

Manele expressed gratitude for Australia’s ongoing support in project financing, health, education, policing, and infrastructure, underlining the collaborative spirit that exists between the two nations. As the Solomon Islands approaches a critical juncture in its development, these discussions signal a hopeful path toward strengthened ties and enhanced opportunities for its citizens.
