A man has been taken into police custody following a tragic accident in Labasa that occurred on December 4, where his 16-year-old nephew is alleged to have driven the vehicle in question. Acting Divisional Police Commander North, Superintendent of Police Eroni Soqosoqo, confirmed this development.
The victim, identified as Shalvin Lal from Tuatua, Labasa, left his guardian’s home around midnight to pick up his uncle. The accident took place shortly after 1am in Naduna, when the teenager reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and collide with a culvert. Unfortunately, Lal died as a result of the impact.
Superintendent Soqosoqo stated that the uncle, who permitted his nephew to drive, has been brought in for questioning at the Labasa Police Station. The investigation will also examine the circumstances surrounding the fact that the deceased was driving without a valid driver’s license. Once the investigation is complete, the file will be sent to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for further legal action.
This incident highlights the critical importance of ensuring that young drivers are fully licensed and trained before getting behind the wheel. It serves as a stark reminder for guardians and parents about the repercussions of allowing minors to operate vehicles without proper supervision or authorization.
As the investigation unfolds, it is hoped that it will lead to enhanced awareness of road safety and stricter enforcement of driving regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
