Landowners in Namosi, opposed to mining activities on their territory, have criticized the Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, calling his remarks ‘unprofessional’. This response comes after Vosarogo questioned the role of Lomani Au Maroroi Au (LAMA) chairman Sipiriano Nariva within the iTaukei administrative framework.

In a statement, LAMA emphasized that Vosarogo’s comments indicate a disconnect from the local community’s concerns. They accused him of siding with Tui Namosi to push forward developments without securing the consent of landowners, which they argue is crucial. LAMA made it clear that neither Vosarogo nor Tui Namosi are the rightful landowners in the areas of interest for prospective mining.

LAMA further stated that the land designated for mining does not belong solely to Mataqali Nabukebuke; they also represent other landowners. They urged Vosarogo to take the time to listen to all landowners rather than focusing on a select few.

Critics mentioned that Vosarogo has not visited Namosi to grasp the local sentiment, relying instead on his relationship with Tui Namosi to inform his understanding of the situation. They pointed out that the objections to the license renewal came from LAMA, not just Nabukebuke, and encouraged Vosarogo to engage meaningfully with all landowners.

In light of these criticisms, Vosarogo has stated he plans to address the matter further in a meeting scheduled with the Mataqali Nabukebuke for mid-2025.

This situation represents a significant moment in land and mining discussions in Fiji, highlighting the importance of listening to local voices in decisions that impact their communities. It is a reminder of the critical balance that needs to be struck between development and the rights of landowners, promoting inclusive dialogue is essential for sustainable outcomes.

Overall, there is the potential for positive change if all stakeholders can engage in open communication and work collaboratively towards solutions that respect community rights while considering economic development.
