FIJI GLOBAL NEWS

Beyond the headline

A heavy rain alert remains in force for the whole of Fiji, and a coastal inundation alert continues for southern coastal areas of the Coral Coast/Sigatoka, the Mamanuca Islands, Vatulele, Kadavu and southern Lau. A slow-moving trough of low pressure with associated cloud, showers and rain lies across the islands and is drifting southeastward, while a separate low well to the south is generating moderate southwesterly swells. An easterly wind flow prevails across the group.

Through tonight, occasional rain is expected across the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, Serua‑Namosi, Navua‑Suva‑Nausori, Tailevu‑Naitasiri, Ra‑Rakiraki, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, southern Bua and Cakaudrove provinces, Taveuni and its nearby islands, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups. Elsewhere conditions will be partly cloudy with some showers. Afternoon and evening thunderstorms are possible, with isolated heavy falls that could cause flash flooding in low‑lying and flood‑prone areas.

Coastal sea flooding is likely during high tides along southern Viti Levu (Coral Coast–Sigatoka), the Mamanuca group, Vatulele, Kadavu and southern Lau; this coastal inundation is expected to gradually abate later today. Winds will be moderate easterly, fresh at times, with moderate to rough seas and the addition of southwesterly swells in places, so coastal and small craft operators should take care.

The outlook for Friday is for cloudy periods with showers over Serua‑Namosi, Navua‑Suva‑Nausori, Tailevu‑Naitasiri, Ra‑Rakiraki, Kadavu and nearby islands, southern Bua and Cakaudrove provinces, Taveuni and nearby islands, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups. Most other areas should be mostly fine apart from possible afternoon or evening showers and isolated thunderstorms. Winds will be moderate to fresh from the east, gusty at times, with seas remaining moderate to rough. Daytime temperatures will generally range from the low 20s to low 30s Celsius across the islands.

Rotuma remains under a moist easterly flow with cloudy periods and some showers, moderate easterly winds and moderate seas. Expect temperatures around the mid‑20s to low 30s Celsius, with a similar chance of showers on Friday.
