Fiji Airports has made significant progress in modernizing Nadi International Airport by successfully operating its first new aerobridge. This development is part of a $10.4 million contract with the Australian company RATE Australia, which covers the installation of six new passenger boarding tunnels at the airport.

The newly operational aerobridge is a crucial element of an ongoing infrastructure modernization program aimed at replacing outdated facilities with contemporary assets that enhance passenger experiences and operational efficiency. The previous aerobridge, the first installed at the airport back in 1985, has been dismantled to facilitate this upgrade.

Mesake Nawari, the Chief Executive Officer of Fiji Airports, expressed pride in this milestone, emphasizing that the new aerobridges align with global standards, bolster the tourism industry, and improve the overall development of Fiji’s aviation sector. “The new aerobridges reflect our commitment to providing world-class infrastructure,” Nawari stated.

The current aerobridge not only features updated safety and accessibility features but also accommodates a wider range of aircraft. The rollout of the remaining five aerobridges is set to occur in phases, with three scheduled for installation by September 2025 and the last two expected by the end of this year.

These advancements in infrastructure underscore the commitment of Fiji Airports to future-proofing airport operations while supporting sustainable growth in air travel demand. Importantly, the new technology integrated within the aerobridges, such as automation for docking and billing processes, will significantly reduce aircraft fuel consumption while stationed at the airport.

This project symbolizes a hopeful outlook for the future of Nadi International Airport, positioning it as a key player in the Blue Pacific aviation landscape and ensuring a better travel experience for passengers. The infrastructure upgrade is just one part of a broader vision that aims to boost tourism and strengthen Fiji’s standing as a preferred destination for travelers.
