During the Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting (CLMM) hosted in Nadi, Fiji, a significant development occurred with the adoption of the Nadi Declaration on Democratic Resilience and Participation. This meeting took place at the Sheraton Fiji Golf and Beach Resort and was chaired by Siromi Turaga, the Minister for Justice and acting Attorney-General.

The Nadi Declaration aims to bolster the rule of law, protect human rights, and foster good governance among member states, including Fiji. Turaga emphasized that this declaration is a timely and crucial response to the increasing global pressures faced by democratic systems. He stated, “The Nadi Declaration reaffirms that the rule of law is the bedrock of democratic resilience,” highlighting the document’s role in preventing democratic backsliding and ensuring that citizens remain at the forefront of governance.

Furthermore, the declaration advocates for enhanced legal literacy, better access to justice, and the creation of monitoring tools to evaluate adherence to democratic principles. Recognizing the unique challenges posed by climate change, particularly for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), the declaration interlinks resilience with governance and sustainable development.

Turaga also asserted that the stability of democratic institutions is closely tied to peace, prosperity, and investor confidence. He noted that “strong institutions, ethical public administration, and respect for human rights create certainty,” which in turn fosters trust and drives sustainable development.

Law ministers expressed their dedication to reinforcing anti-corruption measures, supporting independent parliaments, and expanding opportunities for meaningful public participation. The declaration aligns with the Commonwealth Secretariat’s Strategic Plan for 2025–2030, charting a course for cooperative efforts among member states to enhance democratic standards and accountability.

The Nadi Declaration represents a hopeful commitment by member states to strengthen democracy and governance, promising a more resilient and participatory future for nations within the Commonwealth.
