After several weeks of negotiations regarding the Nasarava catchment, the Nabukarabe clan of Nakama, Labasa, is poised to receive a payout exceeding $1 million within the next six weeks. This substantial sum includes a premium of $765,000, compensation of $610,000, and land rental payments of $35,000, marking a significant resolution to the local dispute.
The agreement was reached after the clan accepted the terms set forth by the Water Authority of Fiji, the Department of Lands, and the iTaukei Land Trust Board. Kalesi Volatabu, the clan’s secretary, expressed optimism about the outcome, stating they expect the payment to be in their bank account by March 10.
To expedite the process, the clan has submitted a written request for all copies or drafts of lease documentation and legal instruments to be completed within seven days. Volatabu also highlighted the importance of a draft copy of the memorandum of understanding, which will outline several non-monetary commitments. These commitments include providing three job placements, renovating a caretaker’s dwelling, conducting road repairs, arranging for two four-wheel-drive vehicles, and establishing an income deposit mechanism.
Solomoni Nata, Chief Executive Officer of the TLTB, confirmed that discussions with trustees and officials from the Water Authority of Fiji took place, leading to a revised offer that is set to benefit the landowners significantly. This agreement not only brings financial relief but also emphasizes community development, showcasing a collaborative effort between the clan and governmental entities.
