The Fiji Football Association’s (FFA) School Holiday Football Development Programme is experiencing a significant rise in participation, indicating its growing appeal among young athletes in Fiji. Sushil Singh, head of football development, reported that attendance numbers are up during recent sessions held at the FFA headquarters in Vatuwaqa, Suva, particularly as many children return from their holidays.

Singh expressed enthusiasm about the turnout, stating, “This is a good number of turnout that we have on a daily basis, and we want to encourage more if we can reach out to more children out there.” He stressed the importance of inclusivity, particularly urging young girls to participate in the program. “We need more girls to come in because now we have equal opportunity for both boys and girls,” he indicated, noting that age-grade competitions are available for everyone.

Singh emphasized that parents’ support is crucial in encouraging their daughters to take part, as this involvement provides valuable opportunities within the sport of football. “This is a good opportunity for the girls because a lot more opportunity is there for girls to make it to the national team and represent the country,” he explained.

In addition to the main program in Suva, the FFA is implementing similar school holiday initiatives across various regions, including Lautoka, promoting skill development and teamwork for youngsters without imposing any financial burden. These programs are designed to be free of charge, making them accessible to all families and enhancing community bonds while encouraging physical fitness.

The ongoing commitment of the FFA to engage youth through sports is a worthy investment in the future, nurturing not only athletic talent but also personal development amongst young participants. As these initiatives continue to expand, they create a hopeful environment where children can explore their passions for football, build friendships, and adopt healthier lifestyles.

In summary, the FFA’s School Holiday Football Development Programme is thriving with increasing participation, particularly among girls, fostering an inclusive atmosphere that opens pathways to national representation. The program’s no-cost structure enhances accessibility, encouraging an active and connected generation of young athletes throughout Fiji.
