Minister Defends Youth Program Funds Amid Criticism

Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru is standing firm against criticism regarding the government’s spending of taxpayer funds, particularly in relation to youth empowerment programs. Speaking to young street dwellers in Lautoka who participated in skills training, he emphasized the importance of these initiatives and dismissed claims that they constitute a misuse of public money. Saukuru noted that while some peers criticize such programs, the focus should be on the potential benefits they bring to the youth who participate.

He reiterated the ministry’s commitment to serving the citizens of Fiji, stating, “We are here to serve you as mandated by the people of Fiji and your government.” His message to the participants was clear: they must demonstrate that the financial resources allocated for their training are meaningful and impactful. The minister acknowledged the challenges and criticism directed towards his ministry but expressed gratitude for the efforts of his staff in organizing what he considers a successful program.

Reflecting on a successful year for the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Saukuru previously highlighted the commitment of the government to promote inclusivity and the welfare of young Fijians, regardless of their background. He reiterated the importance of this focus in laying the groundwork for a productive future in 2025. This ongoing support reinforces the government’s dedication to empowering marginalized groups and nurturing their potential within society.

The insight shared by Minister Saukuru offers a hopeful perspective on the government’s initiatives. By investing in the youth and fostering an environment of empowerment and inclusion, there is potential for significant societal transformation and enhancement of opportunities for Fiji’s younger generation.
