The residents of Lomaiviti and Lau have expressed their ongoing struggles with inadequate water supply and poor road conditions on their islands. During consultations for the National Rural Development Plan, representatives from these areas raised concerns about how the lack of infrastructure is negatively impacting their livelihoods.

Minister for iTaukei Affairs Ifereimi Vasu acknowledged the need for clear guidelines to tailor development efforts to the specific needs of these communities. Many villagers are still grappling with insufficient access to essential services, a situation that has persisted since the devastation caused by Cyclone Winston in 2016.

One resident highlighted the critical situation, stating, “In our division, there is a lack of proper water and sanitation, which is a basic need. The operations of the Water Authority of Fiji are limited to urban centres, so we at least request their assistance to treat the water.” This reflects the urgent need for improved water management and delivery.

In addition, infrastructure issues extend to roads, with claims that many are in disrepair, further complicating access to services and economic opportunities. Minister Vasu reassured residents that these consultations aim to better assess and prioritize development needs. He emphasized that the insights gathered will enable the Ministry of Rural Development to formulate more effective strategies for addressing the unique challenges faced by these communities.

This commitment to listen and respond to local concerns offers a hopeful prospect for addressing the longstanding issues of basic services and infrastructure. The proactive approach taken during the consultations could pave the way for significant improvements in the quality of life for the people of Lomaiviti and Lau.
