Labasa businessman Jamendra Singh has made history as the first heart patient from Fiji’s Northern Division to successfully undergo open-heart bypass surgery at Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH) Hospitals in Nadi. The 54-year-old, hailing from Bulileka in Labasa, had been suffering from chest pains for six months, prompting him to pursue treatment options on Viti Levu.
Expressing his gratitude, Mr. Singh highlighted the exceptional world-class care he received at PSH. He shared, “After six months of running around, I am happy to have received treatment right here in Nadi from one of the best specialists.” Following a crucial angiogram, medical professionals determined that bypass surgery was necessary, as stenting would not have addressed his condition effectively.
The process for his surgery was facilitated by his medical insurance provider, BSP Life, which simplified the necessary paperwork. Renowned cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Sanjeev Khulbey and his dedicated team performed the procedure, which Mr. Singh described as “VIP service.” This experience has emphasized to him the availability of high-quality healthcare locally, reducing the necessity for expensive overseas treatments.
Additionally, Mr. Singh praised PSH’s plans to set up a cardiology department in Labasa, believing it would greatly benefit the local community. Parvish Kumar, founder and CEO of PSH, confirmed that the hospital is committed to enhancing medical technology and services, which will further improve healthcare access for residents.
This noteworthy advancement in local healthcare signifies a positive trend for medical services in Fiji. With patients like Mr. Singh experiencing critical treatments closer to home, there is potential for health tourism in the region to grow. By offering high-quality and affordable medical care, PSH is playing a pivotal role in fostering a more accessible healthcare environment, thereby improving health outcomes and economic opportunities for the community.
