Access to prompt and appropriate medical treatment is crucial for effective disease management. Paula Tulega, a 72-year-old leprosy patient, highlights the importance of maintaining regular medical appointments to successfully manage her condition. Tulega was diagnosed with leprosy in 2022 and is currently receiving treatment at the Tamavua Twomey Hospital.
“I always take heed of the doctor’s advice; every time I come for my appointment,” Tulega shared, emphasizing that discipline and commitment to medical care are vital in her battle against the disease. “From then until now, I have always taken my medications. And for that, I thank the doctors for always advising me on this disease,” she added, reflecting on her treatment journey.
Former nurse Sister Teresia Tinanisolo reminisced about the compassionate care provided by the nursing sisters at the Makogai Island Leprosy Centre, which has played a significant role in the treatment of leprosy patients. “I saw the love, the care for our patients. They never shrank from treating the wounds of those men and women as they dressed them,” she noted, highlighting the importance of compassion in healthcare.
Health officials are urging individuals showing symptoms of leprosy, as well as those diagnosed, to seek medical care early. Timely intervention can prevent complications and significantly improve the quality of life for patients, reinforcing the message that early medical attention can save lives. This outlook fosters hope and encourages those affected to prioritize their health and well-being through consistent treatment and care.
