Prominent lawyer Devanesh Sharma, along with co-counsel Gul Fatima, informed the court that former Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has been hospitalized after suffering a stroke and heart complications earlier this week. This incident has resulted in Sayed-Khaiyum missing his scheduled court appearance for a mention in his ongoing legal case, where he faces an abuse of office charge. His co-defendant, former Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem, is charged with receiving a corrupt benefit.

In court, Sayed-Khaiyum’s legal counsel presented a medical certificate to Chief Justice Salesi Temo, stating that their client is undergoing various tests and that the hospital has not provided a discharge date. The defense expressed a desire for Sayed-Khaiyum to travel overseas for further medical treatment, having received the State’s affidavit on the matter and requested additional time to respond. The prosecution did not object to this request.

The case has been adjourned to September 1 to address several outstanding issues, including Sayed-Khaiyum’s bail. During this session, Chief Justice Temo conveyed his best wishes for Sayed-Khaiyum’s swift recovery, demonstrating a hopeful outlook amid ongoing legal challenges.

This situation echoes previous events earlier this week when Sayed-Khaiyum was taken to the hospital after experiencing severe abdominal pain during court proceedings for a bail variation. His condition seen then was distressing, with him appearing pale and in significant discomfort.

Overall, while the current circumstances are serious, they highlight the importance of health and well-being in the context of legal proceedings. It is a reminder that legal matters must be balanced with personal health considerations. The court’s understanding and pause to allow for medical concerns suggest a compassionate approach during a challenging time.
