Lautoka Rugby Union is setting ambitious goals for 2025, according to head coach Penioni Ranitu. In a recent interview, he reflected on a successful 2024 season where the team proved many critics wrong by performing exceptionally well against larger clubs.

Ranitu acknowledged the team’s shortcomings in reaching the Skipper Cup quarter-finals, but expressed pride in their historical achievement of winning the Farebrother Sullivan Trophy after a 21-year drought. The team secured this victory against Nadi with a score of 16-10, during which utility back Isikeli Rabitu was named man of the match for his pivotal performance, including a decisive try and two penalties.

The coach emphasized the importance of the team’s preparation and the development of young players alongside seasoned athletes, which he believes contributed to their success this year. Ranitu noted the goal for 2025 is to elevate their performance, with aspirations to reach the quarter-finals, semi-finals, or even the finals of the Skipper Cup.

As they look ahead, Lautoka Rugby Union plans to maintain their rigorous training schedule, adding new players to enhance their squad’s depth. Ranitu highlighted the increasing competitiveness in rugby and underlined their desire not just to participate, but to make a significant impact in the upcoming season.

A key player to watch in 2025 is Isikeli Rabitu, who has been recognized in RugbyPass’ list of promising U21 players. Ranitu praised Rabitu’s contributions and consistency, noting his potential to make a significant mark in the Super Rugby arena next year.

In summary, Lautoka Rugby Union is poised for a strong performance in 2025, with a focus on building on their achievements in 2024, nurturing young talent, and competing fiercely in upcoming tournaments. The future looks bright for the team, fueled by motivation and ambition.
