The Fiji Police Force is grieving the loss of a 46-year-old officer who tragically died from injuries sustained during a traffic operation in Labasa. The incident occurred on Saturday night along the Labasa–Nasekula Road, where the officer was engaged in a traffic stop alongside an officer from the Land Transport Authority (LTA).

Reports indicate that a truck, driven by a 45-year-old man, collided with two parked vehicles, which then struck the two officers standing by the roadside. The police officer became trapped underneath the truck and was immediately transported to Labasa Hospital in critical condition. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries early the following morning. The LTA officer involved in the incident remains hospitalized.

Authorities are currently conducting an investigation, and the driver of the truck is set to be questioned soon. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu extended his condolences to the bereaved officer’s family, emphasizing the inherent dangers that officers face while carrying out their duties.

The Commissioner also expressed alarm over the increasing frequency of road accidents and fatalities, urging all road users to prioritize safety. The loss not only affected the officer’s immediate family and colleagues but also serves as a poignant reminder of the critical work performed by law enforcement and the risk they undertake daily to ensure public safety.
