Significant changes are set to transform Labasa Town as local authorities prepare for the relocation of the fish market and the construction of a new bus stand in anticipation of the upcoming closure of the Labasa Bridge. The bridge’s upgrade works are expected to have a substantial impact on local traffic and infrastructure, prompting these essential developments.

Paul Jaduram, the chair of the Labasa Town Council, announced that the existing fish market will become a construction zone once work on the bridge commences. To accommodate this transition, plans are in place to relocate the fish market to a new site. The council has secured land next to Damodar City, which is situated opposite the Grand Eastern Hotel, and is currently finalizing documentation with the Lands Ministry to expedite the process.

“Our teams are working around the clock to get the fish market built as soon as possible,” Mr. Jaduram stated, emphasizing their commitment to minimizing disruption for the community.

Additionally, the council is advancing plans for a new bus stand designed to alleviate traffic congestion during the anticipated two to three-year bridge closure. This new bus stand will be strategically located on vacant land near the future Damodar City development, across from the New World supermarket. It aims to serve the western side of the region, including areas such as Siberia, Batinikama, Vunivau, and Basoga, while the existing bus stand will continue to cater to the eastern corridor, servicing locations like Nabouwalu, Dreketi, Savusavu, and Naseakula.

Council officials underline the importance of these changes to ensure effective management of accessibility and traffic flow during one of the largest infrastructure projects undertaken in the Northern region. The proactive measures taken could ultimately lead to improved facilities and a more organized traffic system, heralding a new era of development for Labasa Town.
