A married man has been convicted of raping his ex-wife last year in a case that drew significant attention in Suva. The 25-year-old baker was found guilty by the High Court for the crime that occurred on February 10, 2024. At the time, the 20-year-old victim was at her family’s home when the accused arrived intoxicated and compelled her to follow him to a secluded area, where he engaged in non-consensual sexual intercourse.

Justice Pita Bulamainaivalu, who presided over the case, deemed the victim a credible and reliable witness. He emphasized her composure and truthfulness while testifying, which contributed to the court’s decision that the prosecution had satisfactorily established the accused’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. With the conviction, the man’s bail has been revoked, and he has been remanded in custody pending further legal proceedings.

This case resonates with ongoing discussions regarding the prevalence of sexual violence in society and the judicial system’s role in providing justice. Similar past cases, such as the recent conviction of a man for raping a minor, highlight a persistent challenge within Fiji regarding sexual offenses. There is an increased societal awareness and dialogue about the necessity for supportive systems for victims, which may encourage others to come forward and seek justice.

The adjourned hearing is set for August 1, which will continue to reveal more about the measures being taken to address such grave issues as sexual violence. This conviction represents a step towards holding perpetrators accountable and underscores the importance of believing and supporting survivors of sexual assault. Legal systems are evolving, and each successful prosecution adds momentum to creating safer environments for all individuals.
