Justice Minister’s Testimony Exposes Controversial DPP Conversations

The Minister for Justice, Siromi Turaga, provided testimony in the special tribunal hearing concerning the suspended Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Christopher Pryde, held in Suva. During his appearance, Turaga, who is also the complainant in the case, expressed concerns over a lengthy conversation between Pryde and former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, which lasted over 40 minutes.

The tribunal is examining allegations of misconduct and may recommend to the President the removal of Pryde from his position. On February 28, 2023, it was noted that Pryde engaged in discussions with Sayed-Khaiyum while the Criminal Investigation Department was investigating the latter—an inquiry actively involving the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Additionally, it has come to light that Pryde received a monthly superannuation payment of US$1,000 without the necessary approval from relevant judicial authorities.

Turaga described instances from the Japanese Emperor’s birthday celebrations in February 2023 where both Pryde and Sayed-Khaiyum were observed isolated from other attendees during their conversation. He suggested that the nature and timing of their meeting raised serious ethical questions, especially given the ongoing investigation into Sayed-Khaiyum.

When pressed by the tribunal about why he deemed their interaction as inappropriate, Turaga highlighted the ongoing inquiry into potential abuse of power by Sayed-Khaiyum, emphasizing the importance of maintaining clear boundaries between the DPP and individuals under investigation. He noted that Pryde seemed dismissive of the significance of their meeting, referring to it as a casual conversation, which raised alarms for Turaga.

After the incident, Pryde acknowledged his error in judgment, subsequently writing an apology letter to Turaga. The Ministerlater filed a formal complaint with the Judicial Services Commission based on this correspondence.

The tribunal hearing has been adjourned until the following day, with plans to summon six witnesses for further testimony.

This legal proceeding highlights the critical importance of transparency and integrity within public offices, particularly in maintaining professional boundaries and preventing conflicts of interest. Such actions can strengthen public trust in the justice system when addressed properly.

As the tribunal continues its proceedings, there is hope that this case will lead not only to accountability in public office but also to enhanced ethical guidelines that govern interactions between public officials.
