The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has appointed Susana Lomani Waqainabete-Tuisese as its new Regional Director, a move that underscores IUCN’s dedication to fostering Pacific-led leadership and enhancing regional collaborations. Waqainabete-Tuisese will play a crucial role as countries in the Oceania region intensify their efforts on biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable development.

Waqainabete-Tuisese expressed her enthusiasm about joining IUCN during this pivotal time for the Pacific. “The Pacific has always led with resilience, stewardship, and unity,” she stated. She emphasized her commitment to working closely with IUCN’s members, partners, and communities to enhance collaboration, elevate local voices, and implement shared commitments that protect the ocean, lands, and livelihoods of Pacific peoples.

With over thirty years of experience in conservation and sustainable development, she is well-equipped to provide strategic leadership for IUCN’s initiatives throughout Oceania. Her work will focus on supporting national priorities, enhancing institutional partnerships, and advancing practical conservation solutions.

Dr. Grethel Aguilar, IUCN Director General, highlighted Waqainabete-Tuisese’s extensive regional experience and strong commitment to the values of conservation and sustainable development. She stated, “Under her leadership, I am confident that IUCN Oceania will continue to strengthen collaboration with our Members, governments, and partners, ensuring that global commitments translate into tangible action for communities and ecosystems across the region.”

Under Waqainabete-Tuisese’s guidance, the Oceania Regional Office will remain focused on delivering responsive, country-driven support while advancing IUCN’s mission to cultivate a just world that recognizes the importance of conserving nature. This leadership change marks a hopeful step towards enhanced collaboration and effective action in addressing the pressing environmental challenges facing Oceania.
