Fiji’s Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, has expressed unwavering confidence in the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), emphasizing its commitment to maintaining democratic governance and serving the interests of the people. During a recent interview with The Fiji Times, Tikoduadua assured citizens that they have “nothing to fear” from the military, highlighting the institution’s professionalism and adherence to the rule of law.

Tikoduadua reaffirmed his trust in the RFMF’s leadership, stating, “I have absolute confidence in the Commander, the officers, and the soldiers and sailors of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.” He acknowledged that while the future cannot be predicted with certainty, the government is proactively ensuring that the military will not be used to serve individual or group interests that run counter to the will of the populace.

Over the past three years, Fiji has made significant strides in strengthening its democratic framework, and Tikoduadua emphasized the RFMF’s clear role in upholding the Constitution and respecting the mandate derived from democratic elections. He noted that this shared commitment is evident in both the National Security and Defence Review and the National Security Strategy, which underscore the RFMF’s constitutional responsibilities within a contemporary democratic state.

With a focus on safeguarding democracy, Tikoduadua’s statements reflect a hopeful outlook for Fiji’s political landscape, aiming to reassure citizens about the military’s intentions and dedication to national service. This positivity is crucial as the country continues its journey toward a stronger democratic governance structure.
