The Nausori Magistrate’s Court has officially moved the case of a 21-year-old police officer, Constable Apimeleki Vakarusabola Colamoto, to the High Court in Suva. Colamoto is facing charges of an act intended to cause grievous harm following an alleged assault on Vilikesa Bari on November 17.
During a court hearing led by Magistrate Samanunu Vaniqi, Police Prosecutor Shelveen Sharma applied for the transfer of the case, a request that was subsequently approved by the court.
Colamoto has been granted bail under several conditions, including a $100 cash bail bond, the requirement to provide two sureties, the surrender of his travel documents, a stop departure order, and a directive not to commit further offenses or interfere with State witnesses while on bail.
The officer is scheduled to appear in the High Court in Suva on January 20, 2025, where he will receive the details of his case and enter his plea. He has also been allowed time to seek assistance from a Legal Aid lawyer.
This case underscores the importance of due process in legal proceedings, and it remains a subject of public interest as it unfolds in the higher court. The transfer to the High Court reflects the judicial system’s commitment to addressing serious allegations with the appropriate level of scrutiny. The outcome of this case may serve as a reminder of the responsibilities held by those in positions of authority.
As this matter progresses, there is potential for a thorough investigation and a fair resolution, which could ultimately lead to stronger accountability and justice in the community.
