Former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum is currently hospitalized at Lautoka Aspen Medical Hospital following a stroke he suffered on Monday. His condition has rendered him unfit to attend court today, where he was due to appear before Chief Justice Salesi Temo. According to his legal representative, Gul Fatima, a medical report confirmed his need for further tests, and doctors have yet to specify a discharge date.

The court proceedings regarding his bail have been adjourned to August 1, with Justice Temo expressing his wishes for a speedy recovery for Sayed-Khaiyum. Fatima also noted that her client is dealing with heart disease, which adds to the complexity of his health issues.

This situation follows a previous denial from the Suva Magistrate Court, which rejected Sayed-Khaiyum’s request to travel overseas for medical treatment that required specialized care not available in Fiji. He is currently facing serious charges alongside former Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem, including abuse of office and receiving a corrupt benefit.

The circumstances surrounding Sayed-Khaiyum’s health and legal issues highlight the increasing pressure he is facing amidst serious allegations. However, it is hopeful to see that medical care is being prioritized in this case, and the court is accommodating his health status.

It is a trying time for Sayed-Khaiyum, his family, and his legal team, and there is a collective hope for his recovery, which will allow him to address the charges he is facing in due course.
