The Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations has announced that efforts are underway to facilitate a meeting between the striking workers of Yaqara Pastoral Company PTE Ltd and their employer. This development comes as negotiations intensify to address the ongoing industrial dispute that has seen 34 workers, represented by the National Union of Workers, initiate strike action since 8 am on Monday at the company’s Tavua premises.

The strike has arisen from significant concerns regarding unpaid employment entitlements, workplace safety standards, and alleged breaches of agreed terms and conditions. Notably, the union garnered substantial support for the strike, with over 81 percent of members voting in favor during a secret ballot conducted on February 9.

Ministry representatives have engaged with both the union and company management in separate discussions, leading to an agreement in principle for both parties to enter negotiations. Final arrangements for the meeting are currently being worked out.

Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to closely monitoring the situation and has urged both sides to pursue constructive dialogue to foster an amicable resolution. This proactive approach aims to uphold industrial harmony and mitigate future disputes.

The ongoing discussions mark a hopeful step toward addressing the workers’ concerns, ensuring their rights are respected, and enhancing overall workplace conditions.
