Just a few months ago, the prospect of entrepreneurship seemed distant for two young women from Tailevu and Namosi, aged 19 and 23, who were living on the streets. Today, thanks to a groundbreaking initiative called the Vendor Support Program for Displaced Youth, they are embarking on a transformative journey toward self-sufficiency and a brighter future.
This program was inspired by a visit from the Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, to Thurston Garden in Suva, where he witnessed the struggles faced by street dwellers. After hearing their stories, Nalumisa organized a meeting with the Suva City Council and other stakeholders, emphasizing the need for support for this vulnerable population.
The two women have successfully established their own kiosks at the Suva Municipal Market, where they sell food and various products. Their journey reflects the talents and resilience that these young individuals possess, as they are not only motivated to enhance their own futures but also advocate for similar opportunities for others in their community.
In addition to their entrepreneurial endeavors, arrangements are being made to provide them with stable accommodation. The Ministry of Housing, along with other stakeholders, is also assessing the cases of other street dwellers who are eager to pursue education and build steady career paths. This initiative is a part of a broader effort across the nation to empower young individuals and uplift marginalized communities.
Similar initiatives, such as those previously undertaken by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, have shown promising results. Program participants have been encouraged to harness their skills through training in diverse fields, fostering a culture of entrepreneurship and collaboration in Fiji. The government’s ongoing commitment to these young individuals offers hope for significant community changes, paving the way for a more supportive environment for all.
These collective efforts depict a hopeful narrative, reinforcing the idea that with the right support and opportunities, young individuals from vulnerable backgrounds can indeed create a positive impact in their lives and communities.
