National swimming champion Taichi Vakasama believes that success in sports and academics is achievable for everyone. He showcased this belief by graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Fiji on November 29.
The 24-year-old athlete shared his experience with SUNsports, describing the challenges he faced during his six-year journey at the Umanand Prasad School of Medicine and Health Science in Lautoka. Juggling studying and swimming proved to be a significant hurdle, but he ultimately adapted to the new environment and rigorous academic demands.
Vakasama reflected on his first year, highlighting it as a time of adjustment to the academic workload. He faced tough challenges, especially with the pressures of competing in the Olympic Games and navigating the disruptions caused by the pandemic. However, as he progressed through his studies, he learned effective time management, balancing his sports commitments alongside his academic responsibilities. He credited his classmates for their support, explaining that they shared notes and helped him catch up during times he was away for training.
He dedicated his accomplishments to his parents, acknowledging their unwavering support and encouragement as instrumental in his success.
Some of his notable achievements in swimming include competing in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke at the 2018 FINA World Swimming Championships in Hangzhou, China, representing Fiji in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, and setting a record in the Pacific Games for the men’s 200m breaststroke. Vakasama was also a semi-finalist in the men’s 100m breaststroke at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and earned the distinction of being the first Fijian swimmer to win a medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2017.
Vakasama’s background is diverse; his mother is from Japan and his father from Daliconi, Vanuabalavu, in Lau.
This inspiring story serves as a reminder that with dedication, support, and effective time management, individuals can excel in multiple areas of life. Vakasama’s achievements highlight the potential for athletes to pursue academic excellence alongside their sports careers.
