Transitioning from her previous casual job three years ago, Matai made a bold decision to support her husband and four children through the bustling environment of the Suva Municipal Market.
“Supporting my family hasn’t been easy as the sole breadwinner, but being a market vendor has opened many doors for me,” she remarked, sharing the many connections she has made during her time in the market. On particularly good days, she can earn up to $300, which significantly surpasses her previous biweekly paycheck.
Even though her journey is filled with challenges, including fluctuating seafood prices due to high demand and sourcing difficulties, Matai remains undeterred. At the market, sea grapes and crabs are offered at reasonable prices, with sea grapes ranging from $2 to $5 and crabs in coconut milk priced at $5.
Another thriving vendor in Suva’s market, Tokasa Wati, brings over a decade of farming experience to the table. Originating from Lomai Vuna in the highlands of Naitasiri, Wati ventured into farming after completing school. Initially focused on watermelons, she expanded her business to include dalo, corn, pumpkins, and other green vegetables, now earning as much as $3,000 per week during peak seasons.
Farming has proven to be a significant blessing for Wati, enabling her to provide an education for her four children and manage family expenses. She strongly encourages young individuals to leverage their land for financial success, stating, “Every iTaukei person owns land, so there’s no excuse not to make money.”
With dalo bundles selling between $20 and $30, Wati’s inspiring journey showcases the importance of hard work and resourcefulness in overcoming obstacles.
