From Fields to Futures: A Farmer’s Daughter Breaks Barriers with Graduation

Losalini Qalu, a native of Naitasiri, recently graduated from Fiji National University with a Bachelor of Education in Secondary, majoring in Agricultural Science. This accomplishment marks a significant milestone as she is the first in her family to obtain a university degree, a testament to her resilience and dedication.

Raised in a family of farmers, Qalu’s parents worked tirelessly under challenging conditions to support her education. Reflecting on her experiences, she expressed profound gratitude to them, stating, “My parents are my biggest inspiration.” Their sacrifices fueled her determination to succeed, even during moments of doubt. Financial constraints were a constant hurdle, but with the help of the Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Service (TSLS), she was able to pursue her studies.

The graduation ceremony held at Vodafone Arena was an emotional event for her family, especially for her father, Noa Rasasawira, who could not hold back his tears as he witnessed his daughter’s achievement. “I never thought I’d live to see this day,” he shared, capturing the joy of a father celebrating his child’s success.

Beyond her personal achievements, Qalu aims to give back to her community by inspiring young farmers’ children to strive for their dreams. She believes her degree belongs not only to her but also to her parents, her village, and all farmers with aspirations. “This degree isn’t just mine; it belongs to my parents, my village, and every farmer who dreams big,” she emphasized.

Qalu’s inspiring journey resonates with similar stories of resilience and support seen in other graduates from Fiji National University, such as Ana Yabakivou and Manaini Lesavua, who also faced significant challenges on their educational paths. These narratives collectively highlight the enduring power of familial support and determination in achieving educational goals, offering hope and motivation to others in similar circumstances.

The stories of these graduates underscore a hopeful message: with hard work, support from loved ones, and unwavering determination, anyone can overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams.
