Fijian rugby player Sikeli Basiyalo has received an unexpected call-up to join the Fiji men’s rugby sevens training squad, much to his excitement. The 21-year-old who is part of the Fijian Drua development squad, was informed by Drua head coach Glen Jackson that Fiji men’s rugby sevens coach Osea Kolinisau wanted him to be part of the team.
Basiyalo expressed his thrill regarding this opportunity, stating, “Happy to be part of the sevens team—it’s going well.” He acknowledged the heightened pace of sevens rugby compared to his usual gameplay. “Playing sevens is a whole different challenge, the speed of the game is much higher than what I’m used to,” he admitted, revealing that upon receiving the call, he initially found it hard to believe but became keen on seizing this chance.
Joining him in the training squad is his fellow Drua teammate Aisea Nawai. Both players are eager to learn from the experienced members of the sevens squad as they train in preparation for the upcoming Hong Kong Sevens tournament. Basiyalo articulated his goal of absorbing as much knowledge as possible, which he aims to apply to improve his game back with the Drua.
The inclusion of Basiyalo and Nawai comes at a strategic time as Fiji prepares for the Hong Kong Sevens, with an emphasis on integrating fresh talent into the existing squad. Osea Kolinisau has made it clear that selection is not guaranteed, underscoring the competitive spirit and the importance of finding synergy within the team.
This development not only represents a personal milestone for Basiyalo but also showcases Fiji’s commitment to nurturing young talent, ensuring the future strength of Fijian rugby. As fans look forward to seeing how these promising players will perform under pressure, their inclusion brings hope for a strong showing at the upcoming tournament.
