A stay application is set to be filed concerning the charges against former journalist and sports marketing expert Charlie Charters. During Charters’ appearance at the Suva Magistrates Court, his attorney, Seforan Fatiaki, announced the intention to submit the application to the Suva High Court. This decision comes in light of a previous ruling given by the High Court on February 2.

Charters faces two counts of aiding and abetting an unidentified individual within the Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption (FICAC). He has been granted bail while the legal proceedings continue.

In response to the charges, FICAC highlighted that according to Section 13G of the FICAC Act, it is an offense for current or former officers of the Commission to disclose official information without proper authorization. Additionally, Section 45 of the Crimes Act indicates that individuals who assist or encourage the commission of an offense can be deemed guilty of that offense and may face legal repercussions.

FICAC has refrained from releasing any statements as the case is currently under active investigation. The Commission emphasized that discussing a live investigation while it is ongoing would be contrary to established investigative protocols. It remains committed to conducting its inquiries free from external pressures and will uphold its responsibility to ensure a fair legal process.

The proceedings will continue in accordance with established legal practices, and FICAC has stated it will refrain from further comments during this period. The legal landscape for Charters continues to evolve, and many are watching closely as the judicial process unfolds.
