Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has not yet addressed a request for a meeting from the Fiji National University (FNU) Council, which has escalated the matter by filing a complaint with the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) against vice-chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba.
Council chairman Semesa Karavaki confirmed that the complaint has been officially submitted to FICAC. “We have lodged the complaint with FICAC,” Mr. Karavaki stated, noting that there are two specific allegations against Mrs. Baba that warrant investigation by law enforcement and FICAC.
Mr. Karavaki expressed that the council is still awaiting a response from Prime Minister Rabuka regarding their request for a meeting to discuss the allegations and other broader concerns related to the university’s management. He emphasized that the council’s main objective is to safeguard the integrity of the institution while ensuring that due process is followed.
Additionally, the council had previously called for an independent investigation into the operations of FNU, referencing numerous complaints that have emerged. As of the time of publication, inquiries directed to the Prime Minister regarding the potential meeting and further actions were still unanswered.
This situation highlights ongoing governance and accountability issues within the university administration, underscoring the council’s commitment to transparency and integrity in the academic sector in Fiji.
