Fiji’s Students Set to Benefit from New Bus Fare Subsidy!

The Fiji Bus Operators Association has expressed strong support for the Government’s decision to subsidize bus fares for students starting September 1, 2024.

In a statement, FBOA President Richard Lal highlighted that for over 50 years, bus operators have been responsible for subsidizing 50 percent of student bus fares, a requirement not placed on other privatized service industries.

Lal acknowledged the efforts made by Cabinet in discussing and resolving this matter. He explained that the Cabinet’s confirmation means the Government will cover the remaining 50 percent of fares for all students utilizing blue and yellow bus cards.

This decision follows a review of the current bus fare structure conducted by the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission, leading to the establishment of a new fare calculation methodology that implements a uniform fare for all bus passengers.

The FBOA noted that bus operators understand the need for any government to balance national priorities with financial and resource constraints, making this step commendable. Lal emphasized the bus industry’s critical role in supporting Fiji’s economy, providing daily transportation for thousands.

He remarked that the industry has encountered rising costs and increasing service delivery expectations with minimal government support, despite being heavily regulated. Furthermore, he pointed out that the bus sector has been uniquely tasked with delivering social support for school children through subsidized fares, all while facing escalating operational expenses over the past fifty years.
