Fiji’s Road Safety Crisis: Urgent Call for Driver Awareness

Thirteen serious road accidents have been reported on Fiji’s roads this year, raising alarms about safety, particularly as the school year is about to begin. The Fiji Police Force’s Director of Traffic and Transport Control, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitilei Divuana, emphasized the need for prioritizing road safety due to the anticipated increase in traffic.

SSP Divuana expressed concern over the high number of accidents, stating that 11 of the incidents involved drivers losing control of their vehicles, primarily caused by speeding and fatigue. He stressed the importance of careful trip planning, encouraging drivers to take breaks during long journeys and to avoid rushing, which can lead to dangerous driving behavior. “Your safety must come first,” he asserted.

In a positive turn of events, Fiji has recorded no fatalities in road accidents thus far in 2025, in stark contrast to two fatalities during the same period last year. This indicates that ongoing road safety campaigns and community awareness efforts may be having the desired effect.

The Fiji Police Force is committed to maintaining road safety by performing traffic checks and raising awareness among drivers. They encourage drivers to halt at Community Posts along highways for rest breaks, promoting a culture of responsibility on the roads.

In summary, while the number of serious accidents is a cause for concern, the absence of fatalities presents a hopeful outlook. Continued collaboration between the police and the community can foster a safer driving environment, allowing everyone to navigate Fiji’s roads more securely. With the right measures in place and adherence to safety principles, there is every reason to believe that the trend of improving road safety can continue.
