Sitiveni Kuanaivalu Koroituku, a young athlete from Tavua, is set to embark on his first flight to represent Fiji in the high jump at the upcoming 2025 Pacific Mini Games in Palau, which will take place from June 27 to July 9. This marks a significant milestone for the 17-year-old, who has never left the country before and is fueled by his belief that his journey is divinely guided. “God gave me this talent, and I want to use it,” he shared, acknowledging the excitement and nervousness that accompany this new experience.

Koroituku’s journey in athletics began in 2022, where he placed ninth in the Coca-Cola Games during his debut competition. His relentless dedication and perseverance led him to improve dramatically, achieving a second-place finish last year. The young athlete also had the privilege of representing Fiji at the Oceania Championships in 2024, an experience he cherished while donning his country’s colors for the first time.

Training has not always been easy for Koroituku. “When it rains, the field turns muddy, but I still go. Even if the conditions are hard because I know there’s a reward behind the struggle,” he reflected, highlighting the determination he exhibits. His supportive family, especially his brother Rusiate Matai, who holds the national high jump record and won a gold medal at the 2023 Pacific Games, serves as a significant motivator in his pursuit of success.

Koroituku hopes that his performance in Palau will not only bring recognition to his efforts but also earn him a medal to take back home. “Any medal is fine,” he said with a smile, demonstrating a humble approach to his aspirations.

In a wider context, Koroituku’s story is emblematic of the resilience and ambition of young athletes in Fiji, many of whom are preparing to showcase their talents on an international stage during the Mini Games. His journey mirrors those of other promising Fijian athletes, reinforcing a positive narrative about the nation’s emerging sporting talent and the communal support that fuels their dreams. With the Pacific Mini Games on the horizon, excitement is building for Team Fiji and the potential achievements of its young athletes.
