Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, has emphasized the significant agricultural potential in Fiji, particularly regarding rice cultivation, as a key opportunity to bolster food security in the island nation. Despite having ample suitable land, Fiji continues to depend heavily on rice imports. Ambassador Jian advocates for increased support and investment in local rice production to reduce this dependency.

He pointed out that Fiji has the capability for three rice harvests annually, which could shift the nation from being an importer to an exporter of rice. In addition, he underscored the importance of transforming the agricultural sector by utilizing existing resources like dalo and cassava, which are high in starch content. This shift not only aims to strengthen the local economy but also enhances regional food security, especially in light of global supply chain disruptions.

Previously, initiatives have been launched to reinvigorate rice farming in Fiji, including the establishment of a $400,000 rice mill funded by the Chinese government. This facility, located in Ba, aims to assist local farmers and improve production capabilities. The initiative represents a collaborative effort to motivate more individuals in Fiji to participate in rice cultivation, supported by improvements in logistics and infrastructure.

Moreover, the Fijian government and various stakeholders are conducting training sessions for local farmers to adopt modern and sustainable agricultural practices. These efforts reflect a wider commitment to revitalizing Fiji’s rice industry and fostering self-sufficiency. Collectively, these initiatives strive to build a resilient agricultural framework that strengthens food security while reducing reliance on imports, ultimately paving the way for a hopeful and prosperous future for Fiji.
