Fiji’s Prime Minister Prepares for Escalating India-Pakistan Tensions

As tensions escalate between India and Pakistan, Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has reassured the public about the government’s vigilance in safeguarding its citizens in the region. He noted that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is actively coordinating with the Fijian High Commission in New Delhi to gather information regarding Fijians residing in India and those potentially in Pakistan.

Mr. Rabuka indicated that the High Commission is diligently collecting and analyzing details about Fijians living in India, while also expressing a desire to obtain information from Pakistan, should any nationals be present there. This proactive approach follows a recent surge in hostilities marked by the tragic killing of foreign tourists in India, raising significant concerns about possible cross-border implications.

In light of the existing tensions, Rabuka urged for calm and cautioned against immediate retaliatory actions. He stated, “Hopefully, it does not escalate to a scale that would threaten the general population of both countries.” He stressed the importance of a meticulous investigation to ensure that any actions taken are justified and appropriate.

The historical backdrop of conflict between India and Pakistan, particularly over Kashmir, remains a source of anxiety, prompting fears of further escalations that could involve other nations. A Fijian student in West Bengal affirmed feeling safe but advised staying clear of areas of concern while closely monitoring the situation.

As of now, there have been no reports of Fijians affected by the turbulence. The Prime Minister noted that contingency planning, alongside diplomatic outreach, is ongoing to ensure the safety of all citizens. Indian High Commissioner to Fiji, Suneet Mehta, reassured that Fijians in India are safe and that the situation is being managed effectively.

This article captures the essence of diplomatic responsibility during periods of international distress, reflecting Fiji’s commitment to monitor and protect its nationals abroad. Rabuka’s statements emphasize a measured, compassionate response, fostering hope for stability amid growing geopolitical tensions.
